He immediately began a new business in Berlin Ontario (later to be renamed Kitchener) as a builder of new homes and operated under the name of R.W. Bierwagen & Company. One son, his own namesake, went on to become an electrician and helped form the Ontario Electrical Contractors Association, as well as, forging in-roads with the local farmers to get them signed on to using hydro instead of coal oil at their farms. R.W. Bierwagen & Company eventually became known as Bergen Electric Limited (1955) under the guidance of R.W. Bergen (son of the elder Bierwagen ). As time moved forward, other family members became involved in the growing business and other companies were formed as well, and ran as, a retail/wholesale ‘bricks and mortar’ electrical and lighting hub, property development and management, and expanded contracting services.
